Beste Brigittte, Victor Yeimo zit sinds mei 2019 vast omdat hij tijdens een anti-racismedemonstratie opriep tot onafhankelijkheid voor de Papoea’s in Indonesië. Yeimo zit in een kleine isoleercel zonder goede ventilatie. Het gaat erg slecht met zijn gezondheid. Hij heeft een long-en maagaandoening en hoestte onlangs bloed op. Roep Indonesië op om Victor Yeimo onmiddellijk vrij te laten en hem in de tussentijd de medische zorg te geven die hij nodig heeft. Yeimo wordt beschuldigd van 'landverraad'. Dat is een onterechte aanklacht, want hij deed niets anders dan vreedzaam demonstreren. Als hij veroordeeld wordt, kan Yeimo 20 jaar tot levenslang krijgen. Teken de petitie

To Ir. H. Joko Widodo, President of the Republic of Indonesia

Dear President Joko Widodo,

I am writing to express my grave concern for the life of Victor Yeimo. Mr. Yeimo is a pro-independence political activist from Papua who is facing 20 years to life imprisonment for peacefully protesting racial discrimination in Indonesia. Arrested on 9 May 2021, he has been detained in Mako Brimob prison in Jayapura under deplorable conditions which have worsened his pre-existing medical conditions and ultimately led to his hospitalization. With limited access to his family and lawyer, there are ongoing fears that his health continues to deteriorate as he does not get the medical care and treatment he requires.

Therefore, I urge you to immediately release Victor Yeimo and drop all charges against him, unless there is sufficient credible and admissible evidence that he has committed an internationally recognized offence and is granted a fair trial in line with international standards. Pending his release, please grant Victor Yeimo prompt, regular and unrestricted access to medical care on request and as necessary. Lastly, I urge you to ensure that he is protected from torture and other ill-treatment and that he has regular access to his family and a lawyer of his choice in line with the right to a fair trial.
