| Dear Attorney General of the Federation, |
| I
was relieved to learn that the Special Anti-Robbery Squad – SARS was
finally ended. However, those who have been extorted, raped, tortured,
and killed by police officers from the Special Anti-Robbery Squad – SARS
are still waiting for justice. |
| I call on you to ensure that those responsible for extrajudicial killings, torture and other ill-treatment are held accountable. |
| I urge you to effectively reform Nigerian police and prosecute police officers accused of police brutality and violence. |
| Police
should be protecting Nigerians not extorting them or killing them. The
recent protests to demand the end of impunity for police brutality were
violently repressed and many have lost their life during those
demonstrations. Under international law, security forces may only resort
to the use of lethal force when strictly unavoidable to protect against
imminent threat of death or serious injury. |
| Protest is not a crime and Nigerian authorities must protect protesters. |
| It is time to finally end impunity for police brutality and police violence in Nigeria. |
