Rusland, stop het geweld in Oekraïne!

 

De oorlog in Oekraïne leidt tot een verschrikkelijke mensenrechtencrisis. Op 24 februari vielen Russische tanks en troepen het land binnen. Sindsdien zijn er al honderden burgers omgekomen, onder wie kinderen. De VN meldt dat er al meer dan 2 miljoen mensen Oekraïne zijn ontvlucht. Duizenden levens staan op het spel. Roep de Russische ambassadeur in Nederland op om er bij de regering in Moskou op aan te dringen het geweld te stoppen, burgers te beschermen en het internationaal recht te respecteren. Amnesty heeft onweerlegbaar bewijs dat de Russische troepen het internationaal oorlogsrecht en mensenrechten schenden in Oekraïne. Zo vallen er burgerdoden bij aanvallen in woonwijken, zijn er aanvallen op beschermde gebouwen zoals ziekenhuizen en scholen en zet Rusland verboden wapens als clusterbommen in. Your Excellency,

Please call on the authorities in Russia to respect international law, protect civilians, and stop Russian aggression in Ukraine.

Since the Russian invasion began on 24 February 2022, Amnesty International has been documenting the escalation in violations of international humanitarian and human rights law, including the killing and injuring of civilians resulting from indiscriminate attacks on civilian areas and infrastructure.

Strikes on protected objects such as hospitals and schools, the use of explosive weapons with wide area effects, such as ballistic missiles and artillery in civilian areas, and the use of banned indiscriminate weapons such as cluster bombs, may constitute war crimes. All perpetrators must be held to account.

The Russian Federation is acting in clear breach of its obligations under international law. Its actions are blatantly against the rules and principles on which the UN was founded. And it is abusing its position as a permanent member of the UN Security Council to shield itself from accountability.
