Dear Prime Minister, I
write to express my deep concern and distress at the clampdown by the
Indian government on human rights activists, journalists, lawyers and
peaceful protesters, amid its ever-increasing repression of the rights
to freedom of expression, association and peaceful assembly, shrinking
civic space and hindering legitimate human rights work. In
this context, Amnesty International India has also faced harassment and
intimidation at the hands of the authorities, and in September 2020 it
was forced to halt its important human rights work when the Enforcement
Directorate of the Ministry of Finance froze its bank accounts without
prior notice, as required by law. This meant that all of Amnesty India’s
staff had to be let go, in the middle of the pandemic. |
